Tella couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She wanted to dismiss the words of the murderer as simply more lies, but he seemed to know things that no one else should. If he correctly assumed why Director Cantor had not replied to her message, then how much of the rest of his story was true?

Humanity was at risk, and no one seemed to see it coming.

“I need to ask you a question,” Tella said.

Garret stared back at her expectantly.

“Your work has made it necessary to create forgeries, particularly holographic forgeries, correct?”

Garret’s lips curled. “Sometimes. Why?”

Tella hesitated to answer. She didn’t like where her line of questioning was leading, but self-preservation was a difficult voice to ignore. “We have enough footage of Director Cantor to make a passable forgery of his order for the Bastia to provide escort in exchange for a prisoner transport. Would you be able to manipulate it for us?”

Garret's jaw went slack. “You want me to impersonate the Director of the Galactic Confederation? That’s a serious offense, Ambassador.”

“So is dying needlessly when we’re trying to do the right thing,” Tella shot back.

“You’re beginning to sound like one of my men,” Garret replied.

Tella narrowed her eyes at him. She wanted desperately to reach across and knock that smirk off his face. “Never compare me to one of your murderous henchmen. I'm only asking because I'm desperate to get this information out. If we die, then the truth dies with us. Will you do it?”

“Of course, but I need time.”

Tella looked at the clock readout on the bulkhead and said, “You have less than half an hour. Make it quick.”

“I’ll need help then,” Garret said.

“With what?”

“Getting the order correct. Cantor wouldn’t simply say, ‘escort my ambassador to these coordinates,’ and that’s all. He has certain habits we have to recreate.”

Tella hadn’t considered that. Most of her correspondence with him was between the two of them. He tended to drop formalities when dealing with an ambassador, especially the human ones. “AI, do you have any footage of Director Cantor giving dispatch orders to anyone?”

“Is there anyone in particular, Ambassador?”

“No. Anyone is fine.”

Footage appeared on the bulkhead of Cantor speaking. Most were live video feeds, but a few were holograms.

“Copy the holograms and we’ll create forgeries from those,” Garret said.

“Will this work?” Tella asked. A tinge of regret tickled the back of her brain tauntingly. She was digging her grave deeper by the second. Cantor wouldn’t let this stand without adequate punishment. She would be recycled and forgotten to history.

“It will if we get it right. I usually have plenty of prep time for something like this,” Garret replied as he sat at a nearby console and began typing.

“AI, give him every asset he asks for.”

“Yes, Ambassador.”

“I need some time to myself,” Tella said, barely drawing the mercenary’s attention. “If you need me, have the AI contact me.”

“Will do. I work better alone anyway.”

“I’m sure,” Tella replied as she stepped out of the medical bay and approached the bridge. The monitors showed the Bastian ships surrounding them.
